Persian Invasion of Afghanistan (1856)
The Qajar Dynasty of Persia had been in decline for years due to the rise of the European powers and the constant stripping of land from them by the Tsardom of Russia for the last 50 years. The great decline of Persia started with Treaty of Gulistan and then the Treaty of Turkemanchay, which resulted in the Persians ceding all land in Central Asia (Khiva, Amu Darya, Turkestan and Turkmenistan) and the Persian Caucasus (Georgian Iberia, Armenia, Arran, and Dagestan) to the Russian Empire. Meanwhile, to the East, the Persians lost Eastern Baluchistan to the British and Afghanistan after the Persian Civil War following the collapse of the Afsharid Dynasty of Persia in 1747. To the West, Persian and Ottoman borders constantly shifted over Iraq and Kurdistan after numerous wars starting from 1503 to 1736. However since the collapse of the Afsharids, Iraq and Kurdistan remained Ottoman Provinces, though Persia still claims them as a core part of the country.

In 1856, Persia invaded Afghanistan, starting with an offensive towards Herat, Afghanistan. However, the British saw the Persians as a threat and thus hastily sided with the Afghans and quickly crushed the Persian offensive. The British moved on the offensive through the Baluchi desert and invaded the Persian South. The British quickly overran Persia and the war was over. The Qajar Royal Family fled to the Russian embassy in Tehran in which from there, they managed to seek refuge in Moscow, Russia, with the approval of the Czar. At the war's end, the British Mandate of Persia was established as a protectorate (In reality, more of a puppet than a protectorate) of the British Empire.

From 1856 to 1862, the British occupied Persia until January 11th, 1863, when the British decided to end the occupation. The occupation by the British military was extremely harsh as curfews were constantly in effect in major settlements, dissidents were brutally cracked down and executed, and many local businesses were shut down in favor of British companies. And on top of that, the British government forced the Persians to pay reparations to the Afghan monarchy as well as some few compensations to the families of fallen British soldiers. These backbreaking policies started an underground movement by various people in Persia to start plotting against the British and their puppet protectorate.
By 1885, there were three major movements. The very first of them were the Nationalists who seek to establish a nationalist republic (Similar to the Republic of China in our timeline) while at the same time, having the Qajars being ceremonial monarchs with a few executive powers. Currently they are the largest and most popular movement led by the famous Zun Yarsen (Compare to Sun Yat-Sin of the RoC in our timeline) and Reza Khan Pahlavi (Reza Shah in our real universe). British intelligence describes the nationalists as 'terrorists being funded by the Russian government to serve their political interests in Iran.' The Russian ambassador to the Persian Mandate in Tehran laughed at the accusation of funding the nationalists after being interviewed by a local newspaper in Tehran.
"The [Persian] nationalists are a freedom fighting group. We do not support them financially nor militarily, but their cause is a just one"- Ambassador Sergei Sviatoslavovic to a reporter of The Tehran Times.
No matter who or what the nationalists are, they are certainly gaining strength in Persia, and are likely to strike at any opportunity if the British become to preoccupied with other foreign affairs.

The second major movement were the Marxist Jangali (Persian for "Jungle") movement. The Marxists already had origins before the British occupation, during the Qajar dynasty era as socialists but soon with Marx devising his Communist Manifesto, these socialists quickly became radicalized into communists, with the movement further fueled by the industrialization brought about by the British. The Marxists got their name "Jangali" because many of them operated in the mountains of Mazandaran in Northern Persia, where the mountains are filled with forests and fast-moving rivers. The current head of the Jangali Marxist movement is Mirza Ali Kuchak. The Mandate Government claims that the Jangalis have connections to the Russian Bolshevik party and a co-investigation has been launched by the Russian, Persian Mandate, and British governments in a rare act of cooperation to crush the Communist movements in all of their countries.

The old flag used to just contain a sickle and hammer within a star, but many reforms were made to appeal to disaffected nationalists and others in Persia/Iran.

The third major movement (though smaller than the previous two) is the National Socialists of Persia, who seek to bring back the glory days of Zoroastrian Persia while also ridding of the "Muslim filth" who they blame to be the reason why Iran went from decline. The Persian National Socialists argue that the invading Arab Muslims in the 7th and 8th centuries destroyed Iranian culture by forcefully bringing Arabic language, writing, and religion, while on top of that, toppling the glorious Sassanid Empire, the final Zoroastrian Persian Empire in history. Most members of this movement consider Arabs as subhumans and Persian Muslims to be worshiping a false religion. The National Socialists also support atheism in their party in addition to Zoroastrianism. The current leader of the party is Ardalov Hishamlir (alternate Adolf Hitler), who is an ethnic Azeri (Iranian subculture very similar to Persian) who immigrated from formerly Qajar city of Baku, Arran, now part of the Russian Empire's Caucasus territories. He is an advocate of the belief of Pan-Iranism, a union of the Iranian diaspora in Persia, Kurdistan, Afghanistan, and many other parts of South and Central Asia. In addition to that, Ardalov Hislamlir believes in Aryan superiority over other races (Iranian, North Indian, German, Slav superiority; Arabs and South Indians are Subhumans)
